For individuals that will loss all access to coverage on January 1, 2018 when Blue Cross of Georgia leaves most of the metro areas of the state for individual health insurance, the one thing that employees can do now is demand their employer offer affordable health insurance. If you think about it almost everyone that is not in a Medicaid/ Medicare or Peachcare situation either has their own small business that should qualify for a health plan or has an employer that may not be doing anything to provide access now but would if their employees demanded access to coverage. Otherwise the employee might have to seek employment elsewhere. Most plans have a January1st renewal date and employers can start up a group plan at any time. My office and many others around the state can help small employers create and manage health plans for their employee population.
Next when employers say it not affordable… If a plan is $400 per month and they are paying half it adds about $1.50 per hour to their labor cost. Most employers give some sort of raise to most full time employees each year, access to health insurance might be a larger priority this year especially if congress does not come up with a bipartisan solution in the next few months.
